More about Independance and b.supreme

independance is a dynamic dance development resource, based in Brixton South London, which promotes access, encourages innovation and creates opportunities for young people to engage in the arts.

Our vision is based on the creative, inspirational and the transforming potential of arts participation.

Over the next three years, we will have a particular focus on encouraging participation among girls in South London and beyond, especially those living in deprived areas and those at risk of disengagement with, or exclusion from, wider society. We are building new progression routes, including providing accreditation for individuals, workforce development and creative challenges.

Having become recognised as a key Charitable resource in South London, independance has over the last five years, made a name for itself in the nurturing of emerging black artists from all over the capital and in the National and International development of Hip Hop Dance, both in performance and in training.

independance uses the medium of Hip Hop to reach and motivate young people.

Hip Hop has strong appeal for significant numbers of young people especially boys, with girls often intimidated and overpowered in a male-dominated environment. Whilst the majority of agencies and community dance programmes offer Hip Hop activities as a means of engaging hard to reach groups, independance takes this one step further, uniquely seeking to exploit the potential of Hip Hop in the development of young people as rounded citizens and to affirm the bridge between social well-being and artistic innovation with a particular focus on disadvantaged and underachieving girls.

Over the last 5 years independance has worked intensively with a vast range of young people, 82% are of an ethnic minority, 89% are female and 68% are resident in deprived wards.

Currently independance develops all its initiatives through one overarching programme, the b.supreme festival for women in Hip Hop www.bsupreme.co.uk
